Nightclub Design Elements: Nikki Nightclub
When legendary nightclub Crobar in closed in Chicago, it has had a few reincarnations. In 2011, the venue was called Nikki. I was asked to design much of the interior finishes. I created a system of custom-cut two way mirror panels to help a video wall look like something more interesting, as well as cut down on their amount of light output. A temporary one-of-a-kind giant chandelier we made from balloons inspired the creation of an equally enormous complex chandelier of hexagons with programmable lighting effects. Many other elements from lighting, color selections, video graphics, drapery and more were created for the space over the course of 6 months.
We created this enormous temporary chandelier with gold mylar balloons for the opening of the nightclub.
It was internally lit with two scanning spotlights, creating a glowing shimmer.
Mirroring the chandelier was this wall treatment.
The permanent replacement chandelier, an original design made from hexagon panels and frames.
The chandelier’s inner layer of mirrored panels created a special depth effect, and giving a much more complex appearance.
The mirrored panels each have a single channel light bulb for a variety of programmed effects.

A customized programmable LED fixture was suspended in the center that created color and rotational movement.
The enormous fixture visible from all locations in the nightclub.
I designed 2-way mirror panels for all the club installed video displays everywhere.
The mirrors reduced their excessive light output, reflected the club lighting and added a level of interest.
I created a series of borderless video loops designed for the displays to further remove their visual as a television.
